Silver-Zinc Batteries
Just a couple of days after I wrote about the humble Li-ion battery, and more importantly said “When you think about it though, we have been using Li-ion batteries for years now and seemingly we are no nearer to moving on to the next battery technology.” I read with great interest an article on MacRumors website about Silver-Zinc batteries. (original article)
I was quite excited to see these new batteries will be hitting the marker in 2009, and offer up to 40% more run-time than Li-ion. This is great news, as mobile devices are ever increasing in terms of power and functionality, and we are really pushing present battery technology, to the point where we see some new devices that can’t live up to the battery life of the models they replace. Yet at the same time we are seeing increasing time between charges for notebook computers.
From what I have read about Silver-Zinc batteries, we should see a marked increase in run-times for products. However there is a catch, and that is that you won’t be able to simply pop a brand new Silver-Zinc in your Li-ion powered laptop. This is something I find interesting and would really like to find out more information on. So if anyone knows more about the subject please leave feedback either in the comments to this article, or in the forums. I will be doing plenty of research myself, as from my point of view this is a major breakthrough.
