Mobiles and the internet
November 18th, 2008So it's nearly 9am and I'm sitting on the train using my iPhone to type up this post. It has got me thinking just how much I now rely on having Internet access on the go. The ability to check websites and email on the go should not be underestimated, phones are getting "smarter" all the time, does anyone remember the nokia 3310? Or even the 3330 which had WAP technology?
This kind of web on the go was just a matter of time, though it makes me wonder what the next big thing in mobile technology will be.
Windows 7 now officially named
October 18th, 2008Interesting one this week, Microsoft officially named the new version of Windows as Windows 7. This in itself may not seem huge news, but MS has taken a number of approaches to naming its operating system over the last few years.
We've had Windows 1, 2, 3, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP and Windows Vista. Oh and in the professional sector, Windows NT, Windows 2000 then it joined in with XP Professional and Vista etc. Interestingly though, if you look at the "home" versions of Windows, the next iteration should in theory be Windows 9, but hey here's what I think.
Life without the internet
September 22nd, 2008It's now been over a week since I found I had no internet connection at home, and it's really set me thinking. Withdrawal symptoms aside, one thing that really dawned on me is just how much we rely on the internet these days and just how much it is a central part of every day life. Here are some initial thoughts
I never really thought about how often we all say things like "oh just put it in an email" or "i know i'll look that up on google". It has become so natural to me with having the internet on tap, that it has almost felt like not having it is a hinderance. In fact, it has certainly made some things harder as the internet, among other things, is an incredibly useful resource of information.
I will be writing a full report on life without the internet, and how I feel that it is so engrained in our lives that coping without it isn't as easy as it sounds.

Ubuntu interface overhaul
September 14th, 2008News came out on Friday that Canonical have started hiring people to help create a user experience that rivals Apple's Mac OS X.
Over the past few years, I've seen Linux evolving from the state it once was, for the hardcore enthusiast only, to becoming ever more usable. I haven't had the opportunity to use Ubuntu 8, but Ubuntu 7 was a real triumph in taking a solid OS and making it more user friendly.
New iPods - Hands on
September 11th, 2008Just 24 hours after the announcement of the new iPods, I made my way to the Apple store on Regent Street in London to see how the new iPods are. Here's what I thought as I spent time with the new iPod Nano and iPod Touch.
One more thing.....
September 8th, 2008Just a really quick post on the blog today, but I was thinking about the Apple Event tomorrow, and was looking at my round up. The event seems a little thin on material, so I'm predicting we will see Steve Jobs put that infamous slide on the screen and say "There is one more thing".
What that one more thing will be I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get something completely unexpected... here's hoping ![]()
Check back here for analysis of the event, and there will be an accompanying video on YouTube as well ![]()
Apple Event Rumours
September 7th, 2008It's that time again when an Apple event (Let's Rock) is looming large on the horizon, and as ever the rumour mills are in overdrive. With all this speculation it's hard to know what will be revealed at the event.
Here's a run down of what I believe will be the most likely things we will see.
Google Chrome - first thoughts
September 6th, 2008It may not be available for Mac or Linux yet, but Google's new web browser Chrome launched a few days ago for Windows PC's with the Mac and Linux versions said to be coming soon. I felt Chrome should be tried, so I downloaded it to my XP based laptop.
So far I'm quite impressed, it's a very tidy looking interface, if somewhat more minimalist than other browsers out there yet colourful. It's taking some time to get used to as by default there is no menu bar. Instead you have drop down menus from a Spanner icon for settings, and a Page icon to give you access to commands like new window / tab, cut, copy paste etc.
